Elderberry Horticulture

Efficient Production of High-Quality Fruit and Flowers
Science-based horticultural recommendations and guidelines for successful American elderberry production are being studied and developed. This includes orchard establishment, cultivar recommendations for specific regions and environments, fertilizer and plant nutrient recommendations, and weed management strategies for both organic and conventional production.
Pest Management
For Entomology, the objective is to develop and implement an ecologically based Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program for major and emerging pests of American elderberry. Our efforts include identifying and quantifying threats from pests, then developing strategies to manage such pests including the use of existing natural pest enemy systems.
